About Austin Browncoats:

Austin Browncoats, founded in 2007, is a 501(c)(3), tax-exempt non-profit located in Austin, TX. Austin Browncoats work to end violence and discrimination in all sectors of society. We place special focus on working alongside young women and children because, given the opportunity and proper education, young women and children can help create a better world for all beings. Much like our passion for the amazing works of Joss Whedon, such as Firefly, we are passionate about our causes and raising funds for our charities, including Equality Now, SafePlace, Heart House, Kids Need to Read and Emancipet.

We started out as a Firefly and Serenity fandom, and would meet every First Sunday of the month to watch an episode of Firefly. We've held on to that tradition, but have expanded upon our activities.

Since our incorporation in July 2007, we've raised money for local and global charities, as well as hosted a number of fundraisers, including Geekstravaganza 2007 and Blazer Tag: Battle of Serenity Valley 2007. We had the honor of being the 2008 Host City for the Browncoat Ball. We host raffles of donated Browncoat goodies at Sci-Fi and Anime Conventions with proceeds going to charity; we sell t-shirts, posters and a number of other Browncoat Must-Haves.

Want to Volunteer:

The Austin Browncoats host charitable functions all year long, ranging from convention booths to large-scale shindigs. While the majority of our events take place in the State of Texas, we also host booths at large conventions, such as Dragon*Con in Atlanta, and are always looking for additional support in a variety of roles. As soon as we've created our list of required volunteer roles, we will post them on our website, as well as our forum and Yahoo!Group. Always feel free to email us if you're interested in a volunteer opportunity.

For volunteers with leadership roles, we have a "Base of Operations" at our BaseCamp, which will keep you up-to-date and in contact with everyone on your team. Volunteers are responsible for purchasing tickets to our charitable events unless otherwise stated.
